The Stories You Tell Yourself Are Shaping Your Life
Have you ever stopped… and really listened to the thoughts running through your mind?
Not just the obvious ones…
But the quieter interpretations… the meaning your mind creates in the moment… the subtle stories forming in the background.
And as you start to notice that…
you might even begin to realize how quickly your mind fills in the blanks… almost automatically.
Because whether you realize it or not…
you are constantly telling yourself a story.
And that story…
is shaping how you feel… how you show up… how you connect… and the life you create.
So… what story are you telling yourself?
And I don’t just mean the loud, obvious thoughts…
I mean the ones that happen in real time.
A look.
A tone.
A pause in conversation.
And somewhere in that moment… your mind creates meaning.
Sometimes so quickly… you don’t even realize it happened.
A coworker walks by and doesn’t say hello…
and something inside you wonders, “Did I do something wrong?”
Your partner is a little quieter than usual…
and your mind fills in the gap, “Something’s off…”
A message goes unanswered…
and suddenly your mind starts coming up with possibilities…
And some of those possibilities…
feel really real.
And as that happens…
your body responds right along with it.
Your heart starts racing…
your chest tightens…
your thoughts begin looping…
And all of that started from a story.
Not a fact.
Not certainty.
Just a meaning your mind created in a moment.
And this is something I really want you to notice…
Your mind is incredibly powerful at creating internal experiences.
So powerful that if you imagine something vividly enough…
your body will respond as if it’s real.
And you’ve probably experienced this before…
Thinking about something stressful… and feeling it in your body.
Remembering something painful… and feeling it all over again.
Imagining a worst-case scenario… and noticing your breath change.
So when your mind creates a story…
Your body listens.
Where do these stories come from?
They don’t come out of nowhere.
They’re built over time…
From past experiences…
from moments that felt important or emotional…
from things you heard… or learned… or decided about yourself a long time ago.
And your brain, doing exactly what it’s designed to do…
connects patterns…
fills in gaps…
creates meaning quickly.
Because on some level… it’s trying to help you.
Trying to protect you.
Prepare you.
Keep you safe.
Even if the story it creates… isn’t actually true.
The hidden cost of these stories
When these stories go unnoticed…
they don’t just stay in your mind.
They shape how you feel.
How you react.
How you show up in your relationships.
And before you know it…
You’re playing small.
Holding yourself back.
Avoiding opportunities.
Staying in patterns that don’t feel good anymore.
Or…
You find yourself spiraling into anxiety…
over something that hasn’t even happened.
Your mind starts stacking “what ifs”…
and building scenarios…
until it feels real in your body.
And sometimes… that can turn into full overwhelm… or even panic.
You might notice tension in your relationships…
Assumptions being made…
meaning being created…
distance forming…
Not necessarily because of what was actually said…
But because of what it meant to you in that moment.
Pause for a moment…
And just take a breath…
What if the story you’ve been telling yourself…
isn’t the only option…
—or even the actual reality?
What if it’s just one interpretation your mind chose…
in that moment?
And as you sit with that…
you might start to feel a little space open up.
And in that space…
something new becomes possible.
How to start noticing the story (simple awareness practice)
Most of the time, you don’t catch the thought first…
You feel the emotion.
So start there.
The next time you notice a shift which could be something like: anxiety… tension… frustration… overwhelm…
Pause.
And gently ask yourself:
· What just happened?
· What did I make that mean?
· What story did I create about that?
And just notice…
Because often, the moment you see the story…
something shifts.
You’re no longer fully inside it.
A simple shift you can use in the moment
When you catch yourself in a story…
Just softly say to yourself:
“That’s one way of seeing it…”
And notice what happens.
You don’t have to change anything right away.
But something begins to loosen…
And your mind opens just a little.
Gently shifting the meaning
From that place… you can get curious.
You might ask:
· What else could this mean?
· If I felt calm and grounded, how would I see this?
· Is there another way to look at this that feels more supportive?
And you don’t have to force the answer.
Sometimes it will come right away…
and sometimes it won’t.
Both are okay.
Rewriting your story
This isn’t about forcing positive thinking.
And it’s not about ignoring what you feel.
It starts with awareness.
And then… choice.
Because the moment you recognize the story…
you create space between you and it.
And in that space… you get to choose.
You get to pause instead of react.
You get to ask instead of assume.
You get to stay present instead of jumping ahead.
And the more you practice that…
the less power those automatic stories have.
They start to soften.
They don’t take over as quickly.
And your responses begin to feel more like you… not just a reaction.
And over time…
you may notice something really powerful…
The stories themselves begin to change.
And maybe… just maybe…
You begin telling yourself a different kind of story.
One that feels more grounded.
More supportive.
More aligned with who you really are.
And as that shifts…
Your emotions shift.
Your relationships shift.
Your experience of life shifts.
Not because everything around you changed…
But because the meaning you gave it did.
Imagine this…
Imagine noticing a story… and not getting pulled into it.
Imagine feeling a trigger… and being able to pause.
Imagine responding in a way that actually feels aligned… instead of automatic.
A you nd as you imagine that…
you might also start to realize…
this kind of change doesn’t happen by force.
It begins with awareness.
And you’ve already taken the first step… just by reading this.
